Last night at the 2014 State of Innovation event, Set.fm, an Austin-based music-tech company, was recognized as one of the top startups in central Texas on the Austin A-List by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and South by Southwest. The A-List recognizes 12 of the most promising Austin-area startup companies in the key sectors of enterprise data, entertainment, health, social, wearable tech, innovative world tech, and consumer product goods. The honorees were chosen from over 250 nominated companies. The prestigious A-List recognizes Austin’s most innovative and scalable emerging, growth, and scale stage startups. Set.fm, along with Square Root, Umbel, and TurnKey, made the list in the growth stage category.
“In any startup, we often measure our value in various performance metrics, investor and consumer feedback, and product development progress,” said Matt Peterson, CEO, Set.fm. “Through all those, there is always the question of just who is watching and evaluating and how that may color their opinion. To be evaluated by very successful Austin business leaders looking from the outside in at Set.fm is a great honor. Having grown Set.fm over the last couple years while watching other A-List startups thrive motivated me and my team and I hope that with our success we can do the same for other up and coming Austin startups.”
The list was unveiled at the inaugural State of Innovation event on Wednesday evening at ACL Live and featured speakers Michele Skelding, SVP of global technology and innovation at the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Hugh Forrest, director of SXSW Interactive, Thomas Osha, managing director of innovation and economic development at Wexford Science and Technology, and Mayor Lee Leffingwell, who officially proclaimed May 7, 2014 as “Austin Innovation Day.” Additionally, industry insider discussions were led by Mike Maples, Jr., founding partner at FLOODGATE, Bob Metcalfe, professor of innovation at the University of Texas at Austin, Gene Austin, CEO of Bazaarvoice, and Laura Kilcrease, Austin Catalyst and founder of Triton Ventures.
The primary goal of the A-List is to increase visibility of Austin’s hottest innovators to help recruit additional venture capital investment and top talent to Austin. To date, there has been a combined $348,720,000 million in investment for all A-List honorees since the inception of the awards program in 2011.
“The spirit of entrepreneurship continues to thrive in Austin,” said Hugh Forrest, director of South by Southwest Interactive. “As evident through the high funding, growth, and successful exits of Austin A-List alumni, this city has emerged as one of the world’s top ecosystems for innovative founders and their startups. These startups achieve success via a nurturing support system from the community and Austin offers this opportunity to flourish.”
